Question about how my subs sound.

well with my new box installed and my subs put it, inside the car it sounds freaking great. alot louder then my pos prefab box,but when i open my trunk and you listen to it from there the bass sounds all weird. They both flex alot but it just sounds like poo when im listening to it from the back with my trunk open.

Could this be the settings on my amp? i got a hifonics 1206d amp running at 1 ohm powering two 12.in spl ml-12's.

Currently i have my bass eq./level set on full sub sonic at nothing and i think the LPF at full.

Is that good or should i tweak with it to get a sweeter sound

Set it up right.

Turn off all bass eq's, loudness, ect....

Set your lpf @80hz

If your deck has a sub control turn it all the way up.

set your subsonic to about 5-10hz below the tuning of the box.

Then get a dmm and read the gain setting tutorial in the amp section.

what is the gain set at?

sounds like you have your amp set completely wrong. if i understand correctly:

gain: ???

bass boost: +18dB

subsonic: 15Hz

low pass: 250Hz

-if the gain is turned up too high you'll hear clipping, and that could be your problem (output should read 34.64V with a DMM for 1200W @ 1 ohm)

-if the gains are set correctly, you'd need 76,800W at 45Hz, so you're definitely clipping.

-subsonic is ok if it's a sealed box. if it's ported it should be set at 0.75*tuning frequency

-low pass is WAYYY off, and could also be making it sound bad. try around 80Hz and see how it sounds

if you're clipping in any way you should turn it down! you risk damage to both your subs and your amp. it probably won't sound as loud to your ear, but that's the only safe option!

EDIT: i guess i'm too slow //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif but we both drew the same conclusions!

With your trunk lid open your not getting as much of a reflection, it's like when you roll your windows down in you car, the bass changes. If it sounds fine inside the car and nothing appears to be stressing don't worry about it. It's just cancellations and reinforcement at work.... However your settings are a bit much. Try turning the LPF so that it's a bit lower down, if a notch is labeled 80 try that.

sorry, i'd have to disagree.

if i turn my gain and bass boost all the way up, for one reason or another i can't hear any distortion from inside the car, but when i pop the trunk and listen to the subs up close it sounds like they are being ripped apart //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

my diagnosis stands as gains/bass boost too high. the LPF is also too high, but that wouldn't have nearly the affect as a hugely clipped signal.

that's because you can't hear the mechanical noises through the trunk, they are higher frequencies and dont' carry as easily. I thought he was getting back into the car with his trunk popped and hearing bad noises. If he's just hearing it outside, then yeah he has issues.

id have to agree with tempest, when the trunk is open all the sound is getting shot out of the car. When the subs are enclosed in the trunk it bounces right of the trunk and into the cab, so of course they aren't going to be as loud. But im not saying nothing is wrong at all, im only saying that it makes sense that it would sound different.

he is describing opening the trunk, and listening to it from outside the car.

i still think he's able to hear clipping because he's so close to the subs.

and the amp settings he described are way off, so there's definitely going to be clipping.

woofers distort when in play..

the further they move.. the more evident cms and bl related distortion is

when the trunk is shut.. the vehicle does a decent job of masking these quieter unwanted noises, due to the relative output level of the woofers.. when you're right in front of them, trunk open.. the boosting properties of the vehicle are gone..

your woofers do not have any special designs to limit either distortion.. so it's more evident in play than with some other drivers..

its fine.. shut the trunk and listen to them how you're supposed to.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah i toned down the settings to what you guys said it would be good around and that halped out a bit, it still sounds weird with my trunk open but not as bad and it still sounds great inside the car.

just make sure you have the bass boost set to 0

then, if you have a digital multimeter set your gains as outlined in the sticky thread in the amps section of the forum.

if you do all that correctly, you shouldn't have to worry about damaging anything //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
