ok i have a mb quart raa2400 2 chan amp and i set my gain using a ac voltmeter using the equation sqrt(400x2)= 28.28427125 because each chan is 400 rms and i wired each sub to 2ohms . i used a -3db 60hz tone and the closest i got to 28.28427125 was 27.4 . my question is how accurate are the led cliping indicators? because on some songs they flash when the volume is what i set the gains at.

Some clipping is ok. Just use discretion when cranking it. IME the clipping indicators on that amp are on the safe side, but are accurate. Rememeber that, at best, using the DMM method is just an educated guess...you'd need an o-scope to know for sure if the signal is being clipped.

it could be that your gains are set with a -3dB tone, and some song are recored higher than -3dB, so you get get clipping....

or the DMM and clip signal just aren't calibrated the same.
