cut out the graphic or whatever using foam wood etc, put it directly on the surface then vinyl over it.

cut whatever the design is out of a sheet of funfoam (foamies) that you can get at walmart in the kids crafts. Then glue that design onto the box or whatever you are wrapping. Use headliner adhesive to attach the vinyl and rub it around the foam very carefully.....you may need to use a wooden spoon or something to get the edged tight......

also you may need to heat the vinyl a little with a hair dryer to get it to stretch

what type of glue works best to keep the vinyl around the edges?

3M Hi-Strength 90 spray adhesive. Also look into WHISPER vinyl. Stuff stretches like a dream at room temperature and feels like genuine soft leather.
