does it matter how close to the component speakers that the crossover is, mine are mounted in the trunk and i now most people that have them do them up front by the speaker. does this matter or not?

Not in the real world. In the world of fantasizing engineers the extra resistance caused by the extra length of speaker wire between the crossover and the speaker would cause a mathematical difference. Audible though? Not likely. I'll even go out on a limb and say, ummmm, no you won't hear a difference.
