Question about an old hard drive on a new computer

Why not just connect it via IDE? Sure, it won't fit in your case, but it should be fine if you just temporarily hook it up and set it on the ground or something til you transfer everything. I've never had this problem though =/
That's my idea.

Just run over to CompUSA and pick-up a $5 44 to 40 pin IDE connector.

I pulled the hard drive from my laptop in order to transfer files to my desktop since my laptop died. I have a 2.5" enclosure for the laptop hard drive, and the hard drive is a Samsung SP1614C. I installed the hard drive and the enclosure.
The laptop drive still has XP on it, as it was the boot drive for my laptop. I now have it in an external drive installed on my desktop. It shows up in device manager on my desktop, but not under disk management in administrative tools. I believe all the drivers are up to date.

Any suggestions on what to do to be able to access the hard drive? Any 3rd party program suggestions?
Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Computer Management >> Storage >> Disk Management
Go there and see if windows even see's the hard drive. Can troubleshoot more from there.

I could do that, but I'd really like to keep this drive as an external USB since my laptop is now useless. The main issue is getting my computer to recognize the HDD via its current external HDD setup.
When I first plugged it in, it recognized it, installed it as a USB mass storage device, but it never showed up under My Computer.

Any other ideas?

so windows recognizes it and it shows up in my computer, but you cant access it to transfer files?

*edit just saw the last post

i'm guessing you tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it?

It does not show up in my computer, and never has. When I plugged it in, it ran through the install, and says it was ready to use. I opened up My Computer, wasn't in there.
I did try uninstalling and reinstalling. No difference.

I've been google searching the past 3 days, and can't find a damn thing that helps. Can anyone suggest a decent computer forum that I can ask this question in? Or any other suggestions?

I just bought a 44pin to 40pin adapter on eBay, so I'll wait until that comes and see if that works. Maybe the problem is in the enclosure, but I don't have any other laptop drives to test it out on.

I haven't read this but I"ll just throw the normal fixes for this. First off disk management SHOULD see it. Does the drive spin? Can you hear it feel it moving? Have you checked your bios to run a auto config on the drive?

Also was it in a non windows system prior? lol....I'll just read the thread :p

Ok, to me it sounds like a driver issue. Perhaps windows tried to run it as a mass usb storage, couldn't find the correct drivers and gave up on it. Check hardware manager and look for Yellow ? or ! and see if its there. If it is, it won't show up.

If you still have the old pc, why not setup a small network and transfer across the network rather than all of this?

So does windows recognize it? Showing up in my compter and in the admin tools are two totally different things. When plugging in a new hd with no partition it will not show up in my comp but will in disk management.

Check Device Manager and look for what he said //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif.
