question about a setting on the usx 4065/4085

anyone know what the switch that has options:

- 1+2

- 3+4

- low

...is/what it's for? The only place I see it mentioned in the manual is on the trimodal operation thing. Anyone know exactly what it's for? I hate not knowing what something does...
