Punch 200a4

I realize this is probably a dumb question but im curious. I have a fosgate 200a4 amp running 2 hifonics hfi series 12s not the best but does pretty good for a cheap setup. The amp is 2 ohm stable I read somewhere once that you can make a amp handle lower impendances than what it is rated at as long as it gets and good and steady power supply and isnt allowed to drop below 12 volts or something like that I was just currious if theres any truth to this doesnt sound like it to me but I know that I dont know near as much as some of the people on this forum. Thanks in advance

I would not suggest going below what RF says. If it is for quick burps on an over built SPL biased mono block, that is one thing, but on a multi-channel amp (not sure which series 200a4 you have), it is not the best idea.

I assume with just 2 subs on the amp, you are running 2 mono channels at 4ohms ea.? The amp is rated for 2 ohms minimum. Which is what you have, i assume. Some amps can be safely driven below their recommended minimum impedance. On your older Class A/B amp, I would not recommend it. It makes the amp unstable and generates a lot more heat vs the very little audible gains in sound output. You should be getting 150 +/- watts or so right now..there is no justifiable gain to be had by lowering the impedance any further.

now, there were some cheater amps that were built to handle real low impedance, like 1/4-1/8 ohm, but were only published at higher impedance. that was in the begining of the "hcca" style amps, but they later started publishing the lower imp. ratings. if they say "2ohm stable" that means just that. not 1ohm stable. there were also other amps that would become more stable at lower impeedances when you bought the "kit" which would be utilizing fans in any number of configurations. pretty much all of these are old school 90's american made amps. your rockford, was not one of them. it just does what is published. 2ohm stable in 4ch mode and 4ohm in 2ch btl mode, iirc.
