punch 200 IX

Hello,

I was reading some posts that you have on a old school punch 200ix amplifier, my question is that I have a old style punch 200IX amplifier, and I am currently running two audiobahn subs, alum12Q and they give me a dual 6 ohm, two make it either capable of 6 ohm operation or a 1.5ohm operation, my question is that do you think that it would be safe to run these subs, they are 1000w rms rating at this ohm load, or will this destroy the amp, I have them ran at 6 ohm operation now but they don't do the subs any justice. Would like to push the limits, but not too much as to destroy things. However does this amplifier the punch 200IX have a protection circuit inside that will make it not burn out, but kick off, or was that protection not built in back then. I paid $572 in 1994 for the amplifier. However I am sure you know the power capability of this better than I do. Any input that you have would be greatly appreciated.

Wow. Such hostility...gotta love it.

An 8ohm load will only give each sub 50w. a 2ohm load will give each sub 200w. To play it safe give each sub their own channel and they will get 100w each.

The only reason I said to bridge the amp and give it a 2ohm load in the first place is because it MIGHT be able to take it. I had 2 old school Punch 200ix's and had them bridged down to 1.33ohms putting out 700w each and they took it all day. Again, if you do this it may or may not work. If you try it keep the gain all the way down and monitor the amp for sign of over heating. When I did it I never turned the gains above 1/4."

I need to know if the punch 200IX amplifier is capable of running two subs at 1.5ohms they are dual 6ohms and two are in use, 1000w rms each and at dual 6 alum12q audiobahn then would this fry this amplifier?

is it 2 ohm mono stable ?

if not, you need a new amp

specifications state that this amplifier is 4 ohm stable in bridged mono mode however I have read posts from Trixter that he is having no problem running this amp at 1.33ohms, was wanting verification, and this amplifier was bought in 1994 at a price of $572 so I am sure it was capable of surpassing the specifications without harm to it, just need to know the effect of surpassing it and if it has a thermal protection circuit inside for heating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it ran at 1.33 ohms it will run at 1.5 ohms.

The worst you can do it put it into protect, then you will know that it cannot handle that low of an impedance.

I doubt you will fry the amp

What do you suggest the cooling mechanism for this amp be at running a 1.5ohm load, or is the dissipation of energy through original design enough?

80MM computer fans, the heat sink probably wont be sufficent cooling.

Lower the ohms, the hotter the amp becomes

my coworker has one and is running 3 4-ohms subs in parallel. been running it like that for years. nver had a problem and still going strong.

(3) 4ohm subs in parallel is a draw of 1.33ohms, does the amplifier shut down with this operation or did he add cooling fans to this operation?
