psychoacoustics, how do we determine distance?

I won't even bother, forget I commented at all.

To the threadstarter: I have an appointment in a few days with one of the acoustics professors here at Purdue, and I'll make sure to ask him when I go.

Let see you who wont even say your name is telling me your a somebody (scratch that your a nobody)Who are you again? What are you?
Why would I release my personal information on a forum? What does that do for me? What do I gain? Nothing. If I came up with credentials, you'd just come up with another bullshit excuse for why you're superior to all of us. Newsflash man, we don't care. At this point, I don't even care anymore if you believe me and neither does anybody else. You have no credibility on this forum. Go live in your ignorant world of box building and SPL competitions...and whatever else you do.

and I should listen to what you have to say but people who actually have names and are known call me for advice don't count //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
You don't have to believe me. You don't have to believe anybody. Did I make an inference to you in my original post? What have I posted in this thread to give you an idea that I care about you or your opinion at all? I don't believe I mentioned you once...I'm not trying to convince you of anything. I'm trying to figure out the solution to a problem.

You are an embarrassment to the intelligence of this forum. Please leave.

So pretty much you who is a nobody speak for everyone, right...

I don't believe I ever asked who you were or the identity of any of the members on this forum. Do you know why we don't? Because it doesn't matter, I fail to see how this correlates to any higher learning or progress.

What do you mean "I'm speaking for anybody"

Do you realize how much time and resources you would waste and have tied up if you attempted to test and/or physically construct and build every single idea you've had? Most engineering firms would go bankrupt.

This is starting to become harassment man. You're right this is a public forum...I was not asking anybody in particular. It was a general question. You assumed I was asking YOU specifically and that I was trying to convince YOU of something, and let me assure you thats not the case. Nobody cares for your opinion. If you have nothing to add to this thread, you're useless.

Will you please just cut the bullshit and reveal your true purpose for posting in this thread? You've added nothing so far and already we're at two pages that compromise your unwarranted personal attacks against me. Seriously man, is your self esteem that low that you feel it necessary to flame other people on a public forum? In none of my posts have I ever made a personal attack against you...in the "B&W vs SVS" thread my entire purpose for posting in that thread was for correcting misinformation. You assumed I somehow was discounting your intelligence and was mocking you and have now began a holy jihad against me...get a life man. Do you have nothing else to do with your time? If you're not here for learning or the advancement of knowledge than you have no place on this forum. You've already established that yourself as someone who discredits objective data and cited information, you don't care for learning or discussion...so whats even the point for being on this forum? Is it posting pics of your "uber" setup so people on the internet will think you're cool? Well have fun with that, but your strategy would be a whole lot more effective if you stopped acting like a douchebag. Go practice building boxes or whatever you do for fun. Hell go get a girlfriend, but please leave my threads.

Do you realize how much time and resources you would waste and have tied up if you attempted to test and/or physically construct and build every single idea you've had? Most engineering firms would go bankrupt.
So now you are comparing us to engineering firms? as far as box's go If I have an idea of something that might work better, I try it and a sheet of mdf is only $25 come on that wont bankrupt anyone with a real job lol now some ideas are not even worth trying though but man didn't come this far without experimenting new things.

You assumed I was asking YOU specifically and that I was trying to convince YOU of something, and let me assure you thats not the case. Nobody cares for your opinion. If you have nothing to add to this thread, you're useless.
I didn't assume anything I just said to build it yourself...then you can get back to us and tell us the results.

Its like me right now I am pondering switching subs but according to modeling the new subs I want are only gonna be 1db louder at certain frequencies, But I dunno I rather wait till IKKA does REAL WORLD test and compares both subs which he is gonna do any day now. Now if his real world test's show no signaficant increase in performance then I wont bother but if they do then ill get the new subs.

So what I have been trying to tell you is if someone here doesn't answer your question then go test it and come back to us with the results.

Simply put, how does the brain process the distance of a source of sound?
Uses an Intel QX6600 quad core CPU overclocked to 4.1Ghz, 4Megs of ram

You should stop assuming things. The only analogy thus far that I've included you in was the immigrant construction worker analogy...where you are the immigrant construction worker. I was comparing the practicality of testing acoustic ideas, not box building. Setting up an acoustic lab costs a lot more than $25...

Right there...you assumed I was trying to convince you of something or discredit you

Nobody cares, this thread is not about car audio. We don't care about your experience or your success in "SPL" competitions.

lots of assholes in this thread....

anyways wish i could help, but instead of acoustics i went the engineering route, so i wouldnt know anything about all these front and rear waves and what not.

either way, interesting stuff, i would love to hear the answer.

Ok then who here has a computer that can process sound like the human brain does? or has a lab to test it with?

So if nobody has either how do you expect an answer? but maybe someone does have access to a sound lab but then that will require getting your hands dirty.

I think you should overclock it a little more then it might work //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/redface.gif.62fdbfe1a101588a808c4cff71bcb942.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The answer lies in psychoacoustics (which is why I included it in the thread title). We don't need to model anything to get the answer. The answer lies in the way the brain interprets the sound waves. I don't have an anechoic chamber. Do you? Didn't think so. Thats why "testing" the human ear is out of the question. But there have been affluently funded physicists who have already done this research...the answer is already out there.

BTW I'm tired of arguing. I'm tired of having to explain everything to you. You can have your *win*. I don't care anymore. Will you honestly please stop posting in my threads though?

You have to love thylantyr for the comic relief... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I think a lot of the distance aspects have to do with reflections and time of reflections.

Go into and empty room, stand in the center and snap your fingers. You can't really hear the differences in time but you can hear the walls.

Now move closer towards the walls, snap/clap again.

You here the wall nearest to your first giving you a decent idea of the distance. Our brains have a processing ability that is amazing if we think about it. I am sure the answer to this is simply complex... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
