PS3 Price dropping anytime this year, you think?

I do not play video games. *get that out of the way*

I have been entertaining the idea for quite a while to buy a PS3 as my blu-ray player rather than getting a standalone. With a ps3 I can build an HTPC by running Ubuntu as the o/s on ps3 and going dual-boot w/a HDD upgrade to 250gb. That way I can do all my equalizing/media off the ps3 and have a BD player built in. Cheap all-in-one, whereas a DIY htpc would cost me $700+ (I've spec'd them a few times).

Wal-mart is running a special in the paper for $100 blu-ray gift card with purchase of the 40gb ps3. This is probably the best deal I've seen in a while. I hadn't planned to go BD until later this year, but I'm curious if I should jump on this, or if you guys think the ps3 prices could drop by the EOY. I know they've pretty much stayed constant since they've come out.

I dont think it wont go any lower for a pretty long time.. The prices are already pretty low considering what Ps3 has to offer IMO..

Grab that deal and be glad that you r not one of them who bought it for 600 back then.. (I m one of them lol)

Pachter: Console Price Drops This Holiday

Analyst Michael Pachter expects a $50 price drop will be hitting both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this holiday, but that it will still be hard for the industry to match last year's extraordinary holiday sales.

Speaking at the Electronic Gaming Summit this afternoon, Pachter said that he expects an overall slowdown in video game sales over the next three years.

Pachter expects the industry to see 19 percent growth in the U.S. and 20 percent in Europe this year, with his predicted price drop this holiday. Next year, Pachter expects growth to dip to 16 and 18 percent, unless the consoles drop another $100, which would add another five percent to growth. In 2010 growth will slow to 10 percent and seven percent, unless consoles drop in price by $150, Pachter said.

By the year 2011 Pachter predicts that the industry will flatline unless a new console is introduced.

Wait. That means that game sales will flatten out after six years unless we get a new console. There goes Microsoft's hopes for a seven year console and Sony's plans for a ten year one.

For those who don't know, wal-mart is running a special on the 40gb PS3's where you get a $100 gift card w/purchase. BB is matching this.

Now, I had planned to pick up a PS3 later this year and use it as a HTPC by upgrading the HDD and running the Ubuntu software as my O/S. With this deal, I'm starting to wonder if I should go ahead and jump on it or if something like this will come along later?

I've been trying to do some quick-research on PS3s; differences in the 80/40 versions mainly. From what I can tell the main hits are that the 80 has 4usb ports vs. 40's (2) ports. And the 80gb version is backwards compatible with ps2 games.

The 2 things above don't worry me, because I can buy a usb hub, and I NEVER play video games, much less old ones.

Other than this, is there any 'future proof' issues I'd need to worry about regarding the 2 models? They both can upgrade firmware via the 'net, correct?

I'm sorry to have another PS3 thread, but I'm really having a tough time making this call and would really appreciate some input. If I do this, I'll be spending the next month and half's 'allowance'...

Yea, they all update the same, and the backward compatitblity is meh. I have the 60gig one from launch and ive never used it to play ps2 games.

I personally don't see the price falling on the ps3 like the 360 did, unless they bring out a more stripped down model which I doubt will happen.

Personally 100 dollars free in BR is a pretty good deal.
