Its commonplace for the tweeter to be mounted on the outside of the door panel but what are the pros and cons of mounting the midbass on the outside of the door panel?

as long as you can put a baffle behind it then it will be fine... the door just acts like a baffle like a sub box does for a sub

My factory door locations were for a 4" speaker so I had to make spacer plates to bring the midwoofers away from the door panel so both (a) they would fit and (b) the window mechanism didn't hit the back of the speaker.

are you talking about mounting it to the "outside of the door panel" you mean the plastic panel part? if so, yes you can mount the tweeters there, but the woofers need to be mounted to something solid
