Problems...

I was putting my buddies amp back in his car (speaker amp) and we wired it all up, put the fuse in by the battery and as I was hooking the RCA up to the amp, sparks came off the RCA and the fuse on the amp popped and a BUNCH OF WHITE SMOKE poured out from behind his alpine 9835. His alpine still turns on, but we have no music (fuse popped) so I just took everything out. Anyways, his HU seems to power up and everything correctly, but what was all that smoke that came out, something fried, I just dunno what.

Yeah from what I read I'd say the amp tried to ground through the RCA cable. Not good. Always ground the amp first. The fuse at the battery should be the last thing you connect.

Similar situation happened to me about a month ago. But, you see...I'm smart enough to know to disconnect the Neg terminal, but dumb enough not to act on my knowledge. I was actually removing a speaker in my door and all of the sudden my speakers started whaling what seemed like the worst electric guitar solo in history....I just about crapped pink twinkies is was so loud and piercing. I cut the power, but not before I noticed I had left my HU on and that there were white whisps of smoke coming on out of her. I was actually not all that impressed with the HU anyway. It was a Panasonic and was way too emphatic in the Mid to High range with regard to SQ. So, I went out and got a Pioneer DEH-P7800MP. Pretty sweet HU! Love the controls!
