Here we go:

The unit cannot be used with the software versions earlierthan “2005-02-22”. For details about “iPod Software

Update,” refer to the iPod Instruction Manual.
I haven't updated my iPod in a while because I had a computer crash, and about 1500 of the song's titles got jacked up and I didn't want them to update on my iPod that way.

Are you finding that the iPod's output is the weak link in the SQ? I got the same setup and I think I just may try to get the Alpine USB adapter when they release it in the US so that I can let the HU do the DAC and not the iPod. Problem is then you lose playlist capability I am pretty sure.
I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Right now I'm pulling all the music off my iPod, so I can update it, and load all the music back into iTunes with the correct MP3 tags.

The iPod is still considered to have the best D/A conversion from a portable MP3 player , but again, I haven't had a chance to use mine with my Alpine HU yet.

I believe with the KCE-422i the DAC on the head unit is being used, but I could be wrong.

If you have a Mac you can use a great backloading program called Senuti to take all the music off your ipod and put it back on your computer
For what it's worth you can back door that on any computer to pull the music off. Just go into your file explorer and set it to show all hidden files and folders. The music is on the ipod in hidden folders with hidden files by filenames of random characters. Once you pull all that onto your computer you can have iTunes organize your music for you (Preferences -> Advanced tab -> "Keep iTunes Music folder organized). Of course, this really only works well if you have the proper tags on all your files. I had to do this for a friend when her harddrive crashed.

For some reason, only about 60% of the music on the iPod was pulled off the iPod that way.

I just paid $10 for iGadget, it also pulls off play lists and has other goodies it can preform as well.
