Problems Using DMM to Set Amp Gain

I'm trying to set my sub amp gain with a dmm. I'm having some problems. I have a Alpine head unit. I put the volume to 30 out of 35 and the most AC volts I get on the dmm is 36. I am playing the 50hz test tone. I have all the EQ, bass, treble, etc. off. I am trying to get 40 AC volts because my amp is 1000 watts and my sub is 400 rms. Any help?

I have bad news for you. That amp only has 60 amps worth of fusing and it is class AB. In other words, you would be lucky to get 520 watts RMS @ 2 ohms or 260 watts RMS @ 4 ohms.
