Preamp output voltage

i was reading another forum on similar subject but basically saying that high preamp ouput is artificial HU volume and something that the noise floor over 1volt shouldnt be audible less its another problem to begin with.

anyways my question is, i have 10 volt preamp full blast as its maker recommends. my RF amp says 5 volt recommended, but i never noticed it sounding bad by having input at 10

if i lowered it by half to match amp's recommended input and just turned up my HU volume...would it sound better in any way or does it not even matter?

cause right now i can already crank up my HU almost full blast, 90% before i hear any distortion in bass

if i lowered input i'm guessing i may have to use gains on amp?

i'm asking cause for me to even get to my preamp right now just to adjust it would be a real pain in the @55 as it would require me to take alot of stuff apart, so i'm trying to decide if it might be worth the trouble or not....ya know anything to make it hit harder

I assume you have your gains all the way down with the 10v output. You should be fine the way it is. Its relatively normal to have about a 3:1 gain overlap ratio to account for the dynamics of music. With a 2:1 ratio in your setup, you should have control over most of the range of your volume control without severe clipping with music.
