you base it on the RMS wattage (what can continuously be played), and then there is Peak power (musical outbursts for short periods of time)

wrong!!! you base your wattages on your box. if your sub is rated say 800wrms but you run it in a huge ported box, it may only take say 400w to reach xmax. but if you put it in a small sealed box it may take 900w. everything is dependant on the efficiancy of the box.

and as for peak watts. don't even read this number. it is completly useless!!!!

you do know that there's cheaper and better stuff than jl, don't you.

but ya wired at 2 ohm getting 100w per sub. that wouldn't sound to bad. my g/f used to have 1 12w0 with and mtx 100w amp on it and it sounded pretty good.

well its also dependant on the thermal handling as well as box size.

And remember that you can use a larger amp as long as you adjust the gain accordingly (i.e. turn the gain down).

i'm also interested in audiobahn, kicker, and alpine. the jl was just an example that i thought of. as far as a box, the bigger the box does it mean i will get a better sound from my subs as far as the bass is concerned?

For sealed boxes, reverse that and you will be right. Bigger for SQ, smaller for louder. Bigger box = lower Qtc = "smoother" response; smaller box = higher Qtc = peaky response

as for efficiant i mean that if you build(for example) a large ported box it may take 300w for your sub to reach xmax, but if you build a small ported it may take 600w to reach xmax. there for making the bigger box more efficiant
