power button lights up on receiver, but nothing else functions

Hey everybody,

I am completely green at all this but I hope you all might be able to help. I got $50 for Christmas and so replaced my stock radio in my '95 Saturn Sl2 with a (don't laugh) Dual XD5100. It was literally the cheapest thing I could find online. I would love to have a real stereo but for now this is it.

Anyway, I got everything hooked up with friend who is usually pretty knowledgeable. We used a harness to match the car and everything hooked up very easily and obviously, but when I turned on the ignition, the only thing that happened was the power button lit up. Absolutely nothing else works. It won't accept a cd and literally nothing else comes on.

So, we checked voltage at the fuse and it was 11.something. The car fuse and fuses at the deck are fine, but I get nothing. From everything I have read it sounds like maybe I need to run my own ground to the chassis. Perhaps the ground for the stock radio isn't enough? Would that make sense? Or, is there something else wrong?

I would really appreciate it all if you have some time for a novice like myself.

Thanks a lot.

I am gonna say that either your deck is broken, or where you attached the main power wire to the deck is not providing enough amps to power your deck. While it says 11~12 volts, it does not necessarily mean you can power your deck. You need to about 15 Amps to give the deck enough power.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help all. I got hold of a multimeter and tested the power leads. THe red one was fine but nothing from the "memory" wire so I checked the fuses and yup, their was a little five amp fuse that was blown. You know, if I had listened to my own instincts I probably would have done that without even checking the voltage, but my friend who was suppossed to be more knowledgeable than me didn't think that would be the problem. Just goes to remind me that I should pay more attention to myself.
