Ported RE8 enclosure

Hey I have a quick question i found some calculators online to try and figure out how long and what diameter port I need for an enclosure I made. Here is my question though I have 2 RE8's the internal volume of the enclosure is right around .8 cu ft. total. so about .4cu ft each not including the volume the sub will take up in the enclosure which brings me to RE's ideal enclosure size of .35cu ft. each. I was wondering with this size enclosure is it better to leave it at the optimum volume sealed or, port it but wind up with less volume than is recommended for a ported enclosure for this sub? And also most of the calculators im getting tell me that I would need a 3" diameter port about 16-17 inches long tuned to bout 38hz. does that sound about right? any help would be appreciated guys

isn't .35 each sub ported alittle too small:eyebrow:

I used to run a pair of them at .8 cuft after port and driver displacement with a 3" aeroport. It hammered pretty hard considering.

Your problem (if I read the above correctly) is that you are currently sitting at .7 cuft for the pair after driver displacement... but still havent taken into account the port. You will be too small at that point and are at the point of diminishing returns on the enclosure.... meaning that the port will eat up more space and in order to keep the tuning correct you will have to make it longer... which eats up more space... make it longer... more space... you see the point. Now if you can use the port "externally" then this would solve that problem.

Thanks...

Scott

i was planning on doing an external port since itll be stealth and no one will c it, when I did the calculations in WinISD thought I got about a round 2" diamter port about 7.25 inches long tuned to about 37-38hz can anyone double check that for me?

dude i don't think a 2 inch port for two re8's is going to be cool...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

i got two of my sd208's with a 4 inch port and 1.4 box and they wang real good...i say better to make a proper box then try to run subs in a crappy box...you might be better off making a new box for one re8 if you don't have much room...

well what about 3" diameter, that'd give me a length about 15-16in. long tuned to 37-38hz, this would be an external port, so shouldnt affect volume enclosure needed for the subs
you're still going with minimum specs my friend...

alot of times, many manufacturer will give a minimum spec for box size or whatever which will work for space concious people, but alot of times, if you want to get the best out of your subs, you may need to go bigger, probably at the higher end of the recommendation amount...

i'd recommend a single 3" for a competent 8 like the RE8, but not for two of them...just imo...

I used a 3" aero port for mine. Only everyonce in a while did I get port chuff... and it was no where near what a regular squared edge port would be.... and it more or less let me know I was pushing the little guys to hard in the first place. this was in a regualr cab Ranger with the port firing to the drivers side and loading about 4 inches from the side wall.

Well I decided to just keep it sealed, I'll have pics up soon, did a fiberglass/MDF enclosure in the 2001 yukon, fiberglass molded to the rear quarterpanel completely stealth hidden behind the trimpanel. Full write up and pics coming too

I have ran them in .30-1.0 each ported.

I put 4 in my friends ranger in a 1.2cf box after all displacements with a single 4" firing to the side and it really surprised me.
