Ported Fiberglass Wheel Well Sub Box

Hey guys,

I have a 2004 Subaru Forester, and I'm looking to make a fiberglass box in the wheel well of the trunk, like this:

I have two subwoofers laying around that I could use for this project: Sundown SA-12, or Alpine SWR-1043D. I imagine the Type R will be a bit easier to use since it's a smaller subwoofer.

Currently, I'm using the SA-12 in a sealed box of 1.25 ft^3, and I'm unhappy with the low end, as would be expected from a sealed box. In my last car, I had it in a ported box tuned to 32 Hz, and that was a much better sound, but I need the trunk space for this car.

My idea is to build something like what is shown above, but to keep the top and front flat to maximize airspace. I'll need to keep that plastic cover above the strut accessible so adjust my coilovers, as well as retain clearance for my rear strut tower brace.

I was hoping to add a port of some sort, and a round port seems to be the easiest. The only issue I'm finding is that, assuming approximately 1.5 ft^3 available airspace in the box, the port will need to be much too long to fit in this box. A 3 inch diameter port would have to be approximately 10-12 inches long, depending on final box diameter, to be tuned to 35Hz, which I believe will fit in a box like this if put at an angle coming out of the top.

My questions are as follows: Is this a feasible build, or should I get a better driver designed for a sealed enclosure, and deal with it? Also, if I use a port of a low diameter, how low can I reasonably expect to go without port noise?

Thank you for any and all help.

I say go for the 12, use the space you have and try to go for an angled upward position. I have a post on here where someone was discussing to me about fiberglassing a box like your planning and talking about the angle to put it. If I wouldn't have been thinking of going with 3 12s I probably would have done it.
