I'm building a sub box for my cousin. Its going to be 3.26 cuft tuned to 35hz, do you think he'd would be alright without a ssf? I'm pretty sure he'll need one, but maybe not? Now if I tuned to like 28-30 he probably wouldnt have to use one right, or am I totally wrong? If I do tune it to 35hz, and its nessacry to have one, I could use a inline one set at 30hz right?

yes. ported boxs require the use of a subsonic filter so they do not create over-excursion at uber low subsonic frequencies and destroy their mechanical parts. any ported box playing below tuning will creat over excursion. this is why there are subsonic filters.

i strongly recommned not using a ported box if you do not have SSF.

IMO it's always better safe than sorry. It really depends on what type of music he listens to and whether or not that music will have much content down that low. But, it's always a nice dumbass protector (no offense to your cousin) so he doesn't try to have some fun and play a 0db 10hz sinewave at full volume. And yes, with 35hz tuning an inline 30hz SSF would work

Cousin = retard //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif ... I'll have him get one... Does anybody want to recommend me a place to pick up the f-mod? Ebay has them for 20 plus shipping, does any place have them cheaper?

People, do you go around bumping sine waves? Do you blast music with signals of 25Hz??

Also, what type of music do you listen to?

I have my box tuned at 28hz with no SSF, but I'm also underpowering my subs. That 20hz HP FMOD is looking mighty sweet...
And please dont get a 20Hz fmod with a box tuned to 28Hz unless you watch LOTR in your car.

You never know what some people will try //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/waycrazy.gif.f4a380c3f94043939fd369defd9e6be2.gif

I do play some tracks in my car that have sub 20Hz content, yes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif so the SSF on my Tantrum does come in handy sometimes...

OK people, SSF's work on octaves, so if it is 24dB/octave, then it will cut the signal by 24dB's @ 10Hz. If you were to get the 30Hz one, it would cut it by 24dB's @ 15Hz.

So I guess yes I would say go ahead and use it for the 35Hz box if you feel you need protection, but for the 28Hz box, I really dont think a 20Hz fmod will protect you much, considering subs can usually play relatively safely 6-7Hz below tuning.
