Port tuned to 25Hz?!?!?!

I currently have a JL W3V3-2 in a sealed enclosure that pounds, however, I'd like to build and try a ported enclosure to get that extra 3db out of it. I got the plans for the recommended box of JL's website and they recommend tuning the port to 25Hz. I've never heard of tuning a port this low, usually mid 30's. Below are the specs. Anyone know why they would recommend tuning it this low, if it is a good idea, and if a pre-built box of similar dimensions tuned to 34hz would damage the speaker?

I can't explain it mechanically, but if you put that sub in a modeling program you'll see that if you tune higher (say 35) you get a BIG spike in SPL, about 4db from 45-55 hz, rolling off at about 18db/oct below 40hz making it more of a one note wonder kind of sub. Tuning low gives you a pretty flat response curve,

I was in a similar situation with my 12"

The mfg's recommendation leaned a lot more toward SPL with an Fb of 36hz. The box I built is tuned to 28hz and I really like the sound.

Right now I have the sealed box I built to the exact specs listed on that page. If I build one to the exact specs listed for the ported box will I definitely notice an SPL gain and will I lose a lot of SQ?

tune it to 25hz. it may sound like a loud sealed box,smooth,great low end extension.

I don't think you'll lose SQ. The SQ you have will be about the same, but you'll gain low freq response. Seems to me, all things considered your sq will improve.
