Port SIZE?

I was just wondering what the advantage to using a bigger port vs. a small one. For example a 12"x1.5" xx" legnth port for a 10 or a 12"x3" xx length port for a 10. I know the bigger the longer it must be to keep same tuning as smaller one but its there an advantage?

The bigger the port, the less the port velocity, and the less the chance of port noise. Increasing port area typically also gives you some gains in SPL up to a certain point.

Optimal port size is very box/driver/application dependent.

Going to make a box for my TC sounds oem 10 pretty soon and im thinking of making the port 11x3 tuning it around 32hz. I'm also thinking about flaring out the port and adding a 45 in the corner, just things i havent done yet.

An 11"x3" port will yield 33 sq in of port area which is probably a tad much for a single 10 in a 1 or 1.5 cube box. I mean, if you can make it work, then go for it. But to achieve tuning that low with that large of a port area in such a small net volume... it's gonna be a really ****ing port.

Keep in mind for a 34Hz tuning in 1.5 cubes and 25 sq in of port, you'll need approximately 30" of port length.

Too small of a port is bad

There is no such thing as too big, it just gets impractical with no actual gains in performance after a certain point.

Yeah i have no designs for this box yet, just ideas but most likely will build it this weekend. I think I'm gonna stick with an 11"x2" port, 32hz tuning.

Not true my friend, not true! The closer that the port area gets to the driver's surface area, the less the port behaves like a Helmholtz resonator (what a standard port is) and the more it behaves like a transmission line. If that line is too short, then you will be hit with phase issues the size of the moon. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
