port question.

Hi guys, I am relatively new to this forum, and I have a quick question, but first, an introduction.

I am 19, and currently I am MECP certified both bronze and silver, working on gold. I have worked at major chain stores like Best Buy and Circuit City installing and selling car audio equipment.

Unfortunately, because these are major chain stores, we never really get any serious SQ or SPL systems, so I don't see a lot of experimentation with different materials or installation techniques.

I have experimented with fiberglass on my own car, as well as different driver loading styles just to gain some installing technique of my own, and now it is time to build a new box for my new subwoofer, and this time I am going for a simple ported design, but I have one question about materials.

Has anyone used any different kind of port materials? For example, rather than using PVC pipe or the premade plastic tubes that places like Crutchfield sell (which are pieces of shit anyway), has anyone used something like really strong cardboard like the kind at the center of a roll of carpet?

I know how to build boxes and tune them for frequencies and all that stuff, but one thing I have never really encountered is an actual port tube made using different materials, and I was just curious if this might affect sound at all?

Thanks for the help!

Now if I was going to construct a slot port, would I just have to make sure that the air it displaces is the same as the tube port? I have never done anything with slot ports, just don't encounter it in major chain stores.

welcome man, working on the bronze level right now! ide like to ask u a couple q's about the test if ya dont mind.. anyway..

slot ports can be easy as hell in the right application, but sometimes u dont have the lesuire of using one. (my dilema as we speak)i wouldnt go any smaller than 2" wide, and round the port etc.. the only problem is its not adjustable without some major modification.. (or some real tricky box technique) Jmac is the king of box making, so watever he says is gold, just so ya know! Good luck..

(got an email, i cant PM u?)
