Port facing up or rear with only 2" to tailgate?

Would it be better to face the port to the rear of the vehicle with only 2-3" from the box to the tailgate in a SUV, or should the port face upwards with more area for the air to go? How would facing them to the rear affect the porting?

The subs will be facing upwards.

Face the ports back to the gate, and the subs up. 3" will be fine with the ports.
