port area question

ok so ive built a few boxes so far (5 ported ones). the most recent being the 7 cubed for my sx's. i used 102 sq inches of port (dont ask, there was a little mistake on my part). anyways my question is this: i have read that more port area equals more spl and less port noise. so my question is, what kind of a difference will there be if i use a port like 4x39 runnin down the bottom front face of my box. so about 160sq inches. will there be a noticeable difference in spl or will the only difference be noticed in port noise?

i doubt you will gain 3-5 just by changing your port. especially if you are keeping the frequency the same.

.3 - .5 sounds more reasonable. even then its not a garauntee. if you open it up you -could- lose tenths of a decibel. only one way to tell whats going to happen..... and thats to do it. nothing is garaunteed in the car audio world.

if you have a gain in 50^2 of port it would be negligible to the ear. may or may not pick up much on the sensor. could easily lose dB's as well... depending on your install.
