Port Area (Port Diameter)

Ive looked at lots of threads and everyone seems to say that port area (diameter) needs to be 12-18 in^2 for each cubic foot..

Is this just a known fact or are there calculations that are involved for the "ports diameter"(I understand port area and length affect the tuning). Also how does going higher or lower on the ports diameter affect the boxes performance.

and do these "RULES" apply to AERO ports flared and unflared?..

type r is much louder then type x. if ur doin aeros do 2 or 3 4" aeros and 2 audioque sd 2.5's in 4 cubes tuned around 36hz. it would dominate type x's.
i disagree that a single type R is much louder than a single type x. the type x won't perform well as an spl sub, but in a box made for a daily driver, i'd take the type x any day.
