popping sound

im not sure if this should have been posted in the subs or amps or im retarded and its a simple problem section. . the problem is that when i have the amp (JL 500.1) hooked up to the subs (JL 12w3's [2]) and have it turned up moe than like 1/3 power they start to make a poping sound when the stereo is turned up. i had these same speakers and amp hooked up in my brothers impala and it worked fine up till a little over half power then the subs would shut off because they cant handle the power. my question is why do they make the popping sound? TIA

simple fix here:

TURN THE AMP GAINS DOWN!

the popping you're hearing is distortion being created because the amp is being driven way beyond it's mechanical limits and clipping the signal. You're lucky one of your w3's hasn't gotten pissed off enough to blow yet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

One more thing....your subs weren't shutting off. They don't know/don't care that they're getting too much power. The amp is going into protection mode because the clipped signal it's putting out has a lot more power than an unclipped signal and is making the amp get hot and shut off.

To set your gains (here goes again!)

Turn the gains all the way down. Now crank your head unit up to the loudest comfortable listening level (the place just before the regular speakers start to distort). My CD player maxes at 63, but I'd never turn it up past 45, so that's where I set the gains at (get the idea?). Now slowly turn your gains up until you hear that popping noise in your sub. Back it down a notch until the popping stops. BOO-YAH! Your gains are now properly set.

ENJOY!

oh yeah that's for a sealed box ....

don't forget this....GAIN IS NOT A VOLUME CONTROL...... IT IS TO MATCH THE SIGNAL OUT PUT OF YOUR HEAD UNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif i hate repeating that....
