my hu turns off and right after i hear a thump from the sub.
is this normal with aq amps or did i instal something wrong?
Sounds like something internal is faulty. Most decent amps have built in turn on/off thump prevention circuitry, and it sounds like some cap is getting discharged through your sub when the amp turns off.

Like @maylar said, delay the turn on to the amplifier only. 3 to 5 seconds should take care of it.
