I use it in the box I got my re8 in. helps out on low end if the box is on the small side...

hurt the performance of my cvr's tho but their box was a bit bigger than recommended. guess just depends on the situation and application. my re8 is a ht sub btw

Car subwoofers don't need it if the box is properly designed, it makes the subs react as if the box is 10~15% larger so if the box is already too big then it'll lower the tuning frequency even more and your bass will get sloppy.

They're useful if your box is too small for your subs, leave a clear airway from your sub to the port if you have one. But then again you can just spend some $$$ and have the right box built.
