Polyfill: waste of time, or usefull and actually works?

From what I hear, using polyfill has the effect of adding 10% volume to your box, and it's just as effective in ported and sealed

****, definately gonna try it out tommorow then. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif Ill post back with my results. So if my box is .80 cu ft after displacement, how much should i add?

polyfill isn't quite as good for ported boxes. the reasons are because it affects port tuning frequency and quality.

basically its a little like a pillow, and is more acoustically resistive then air. this means the port is not as effective. these effects may have a positive effect on sound, but such is never garunteed.

in Transmission Lines poly is used to damp out 3rd and 5th resonances which would color the sound. because of the frequency dependence, poly is also used to reduce standing wave energy in boxes. both of these issues are more common in setups that need to play above 100hz.

the polyfill will help the low end, but now the woofer 'thinks' it's even in a larger enclosure...if it's bottoming out, it's the woofer..

so is it defecting or am i overpowering it? Sounds like this woofer needs to be sold and i need one that can handle 1200 watts rms on a constant basis. Regardless i am getting a new box though.

You said in your first post you could tell the subs was 'suffocating for air'. But now you're saying its bottoming out (suggesting the enclosure is too large given the power input). Im confused what the real problem is.

And uhm, did you ever get those gains set right? lol //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah gains are set. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif That is precisely why i am confused too. The box is obviously too small, yet they are bottoming out. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Once my box is built, i honsetly don't know how long this sub is gonna stay, i can't have a high end sub like this bottoming out on me, even my perfect that i got for 140 bucks never bottomed out on me. So what is the real problem? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif I have the gain soooooo low and it is still bottoming out, my head unit has to be at like max volume now since the gain is so low, yet it still bottoms out. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif I think its time to let this sub go, if anything its gonna bottom out more once I get a bigger enclosure.

Yep. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
I also found out that my amp is very underrated and could possibly be putting out 1350 watts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif Maybe im just sending the sub too much power or something. I should sell it and pick up an XXX or something.
