polyfill or not to polyfill

i've got my enclosure for my Kicker 12" L7. It is a 2.0cu ft sealed (Kicker's recommendation for an supposed "SQ" enclosure). The manual for the sub says that they recommend filling the sealed enclosures with 50% loose polyfill. I was under the impression that polyfill made the sub act as if it were in a larger enclosure, but isn't 2.0cu ft sealed a pretty big box for a 12" already? I'm don't really care about output/loudness.

So should I fill it 50% like Kicker says, or leave it empty, or something else?

If Kicker recommends it try it. But if the enclosure is big enough to achieve the alignment that suites your taste I see no reason to. Unless 2.2 cu ft is actually what they arrive at for a SQ enclosure. i don't get it. Doesn'r 2.0 cu ft go against the entire principle of Solobarik?

I have never heard the L7 refered to as an SQ sub. I thought they where desinged to create great SPL. Normally the larger the encolosure the lower a sub will play. The only thing Poly fill is going to do is make the sub think it has even more air space than it does.

Generally 2.0 cube is a big box for a 12 talking SQ. Most people looking for SQ run a small sealed enclosure but it depends on the driver. Some drivers require more airspace than others. Just like a TC-1000 12 requires less vs. an IDMAX in a sealed enclosure. Have never used an L7 and do not plan to ever. Sorry can't be of more help.

Hopefully someone with some actually experince with the L7 will chim in and give all the correct answers to your question.

genxx, I've neverheard of it referred to as an SQ sub either except in the Kicker manual. I was just lookng to get the most SQ I could out of it, I made a crappy choice so now I'm justing trying to make the best of it.

What size ported would you recommend?

Sticking strictly to the numbers...a 2.0 cube box filled 50% would be 1 lb of loose polyfill,,, saying that you actually acheive the supposed 30% increase, that is (at BEST) making the sub think it is in a 2.6 cube box. Win ISD Shows you the difference on paper...

2.0 cube-no poly fill

2.6 Cube - 1 lb polyfill

I would make the box as large as you can and use the poly as a last resort. IMO
