I strongly feel that this forum could use some sort of initiation setup when one signs up. They have a dedicated initiation forum over at OT, and at DiyAudio, a moderator has to approve your first few posts. This would greatly cut down on the useless posting and repeated questions. Just seeing who agrees with it.

A man walking along the beach spotted a young girl throwing beached fish back into the water. There must have been hundreds, if not thousands of them flapping and flailing for air. The man walked up to her and said,

"Little girl, this is useless. You cannot possibly save all these fish."

Without looking up, the girl said,

"No, but I can save this one, and this one, and this one..." and she continued to throw them back into the water

Any gain is a positive gain in my mind.

Okay - let's assume for the sake of argument that a required initiation period was instituted. During said initiation one or more moderators have to approve of each and every post you make.

There are two immediate problems I can see implementing such a thing.

(1) The entire moderation team isn't actively a part of the forum. How many of those that are regularly active are going to agree with a mandatory additional "workload" ??

(2) What mechanism will keep someone from watching their Ps and Qs during the initiation period and then turning into a complete moron after they are freed to post as they see fit?

1. That's why on a site of this size, a dedicated initiation area should be required. It has two benefits. One, since there is no "dedicated" moderation staff, the mods wouldn't have to check every single post like happens on slower forums such as DIYaudio. Also, this makes newcomers be REQUIRED to learn before they post in real threads. Having them read all the important stickies would be excellent, provided they were actually pertinent. Second, if there is a new member who is very deep into audio (scottiej for example), the newcomers can get even more specialized help from those newcomers who are already experienced since it will all be in one area.

2. The same holds true elsewhere. After spending time in initiation, I feel that the chances that you could get an asshat out of the deal would be much less. It kind of sets up the parameters, shows that the site is serious about good fellowship and learning.

Also prowler, on number two, would you think it be worthwhile that you spend a few weeks on lockdown just go go create chaos? I would just go and find a new forum. If you're serious about getting in and learning, then you should be serious afterwards.

Keep the ideas coming, I'm always up for a good collaborative argument. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well, I guess I would have been for it... if it would have been implemented in say... April of 2004 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif...

Maybe would have gotten rid of... some people.

It's a good idea, and I really like how it works ... guess you can say I'm weighing the idea in my head right now, no definite answer.

See what the Admin says.

Would frotchlover have passed...because although she has showed her boooobs...she really hasnt related to car audio at alllll. THAT is true post whoring.

Could be good...could be bad. I dont have a real problem with the members joining recently. I have a problem with the members who have been here a short or medium amount of time that bash, flame, and not contribute to any real use here.

I'd be for it if the majority ruled that way.

Exactly, how will you know how someone is GOING to be when they're comfortable with the forum? Hardly anyone is a problem at first, except for the occasional troll or dealer spam, they become issues as they get used to the goings on and decide it's ok to act out and be a spaz.
