What about porting along the bottom? Or no, even better, porting out the side if you can manage that, since that way you'll definitely have plenty of height to work with and you have all the space in the world on the top baffle.
I might still redo a previous design i had made (and lost due to a computer crash) for a ~4ft^3 with an 8" flared tube to the side. I have a jpeg of it from an old thread i created, but don't have the dimensions anymore (everything is to scale relative to each other on the pic though, but was planning on adding a second baffle on the top for flush mounting the subs and for extra support):

About along the bottom though, The only thing i'm worried about is that I've heard that for slot ports, the port height vs port width shouldn't be more than a ratio of 1 to 8. With a 40" wide box, I'm pretty sure i would exceed that unless I didn't use the whole width of the box.

You don't have to, you could easily do an 8x10" port right in the middle. Even then, the 1/8 rule really only applies to applications where you'll end up with compression even if you have proper port area. 2" is wide enough so that you don't have to worry about it.

every once in a while, i like messing around in solidworks for a little bit, whether it be a sub box or some other random thing.

would you recommend the 8" aero to the side compared to any of the above listed so far? I've never tried port side before, and i know sub up port back is tried and proven by many on this site. Would the aero be better than some sort of L port variation (like the 8x10" port on the bottom of the box)?
