Polk R50 and Polk R300

R50, R300

I purchased a set of R50s. I so wish they had em in black! I'll have to settle for cherry or paint em if they are that bad, I heard they are more like a darker brown. Did you get yours yet? if so post pictures! Mines come Friday.

Yep, I unboxed them and set 'em up.

I got a set of R50 and of R300.

The cherry is nice, although I wanted black also. I was thinking I'd refinish them in another laminate, but honestly, they look great. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Both of the R50 grilles were lightly damaged during shipping. That's okay, .. They're sexier without the grilles //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hopefully yours make it in good shape.

Don't mean to add any doubt, but I wonder if Polk actually takes into account what happens with an enclosure of that size and ratio (long and tall). This really goes for any manufacture who labels or produces "Bass reflex" floor standers similar to these...

When you reach a certain threshold of length, the cabinet begins to produce standing waves in the cabinet, which can positively or negatively effect the systems response depending on if the effects are taking into consideration. What you see is actually a mass loaded transmission line (MLTL) or a variant of the sort and NOT a bass reflex, unless the enclosure has two chambers and is a double bass reflex...

Either way thats an insane price...

You sure are on that box kick as of late.

Hell, the temperature and humidity in the room can do that.

depending on if the effects are taking into consideration.
What? Too much Linkwitz, man. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

It's impossible for any ranged enclosure to perform on paper for all the possible wave patterns and varying amplitudes in music. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Besides, I'm sure there are many improvements that could be made in most listening areas that would have a greater effect than an improvement in the cabinet.

Sure, if the speaker played a particular frequency or multiple thereof, you could design a technically correct enclosure for wave reinforcement. You could even get really fancy with it.

But this is music, baby!

can i order these? i was first introduced to frys last week down in california, and the only one in washington state is 5 hours away //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Im all for getting the system as flat as possible, then measure it in room, EQ it as flat as possible once again (parametric equalizers and powerful amplifiers for headroom). Obviously its never going to be near perfect, especially with phenomenons such as the mid bass **** out with our low American ceilings, however wouldn't you want to get is as close as possible on paper first, then take the environment into effect? If yo ignore the physics, it could in fact make the response more ragged and/or increase/decrease the peaks and nulls respectively...
I totally agree with you, it is music, dynamic, etc. But the music itself that we buy and play is dynamic in its recorded studio (or live) form, let the recording do most of the talking, not the inconsistencies found in the enclosure, environment, or otherwise //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Edit: Ahh the linkwitz website! I had forgotten about it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif I don't really reference anything from there, I just use common sense, the only time I ever visited his site is for more information on his dipole sub woofers, which I am still intrigued by //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I would, except for one major issue that people seem to overlook. The human ear does not have a flat 'response,' and to wit, there's no way to measure what we actually hear.

So, I've distanced myself from concern with the graphs, charts, plots.. Now I just tune it to make me happy. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
