Police to seize cars playing loud music

By Laura Clout

Last Updated: 1:26am BST 15/08/2007

Drivers who cruise the streets with loud music blaring risk losing more than their hearing. Police in Birmingham have pledged to confiscate their cars if they refuse to turn down the volume.

Operation United will target drivers of souped-up vehicles with high-output boom boxes who congregate in the Broad Street entertainment district of the city.

Acting Sgt Jake Flanagan, of West Midlands Police, said: "Where a vehicle is being driven in a careless or inconsiderate manner and is likely to cause harassment, distress or annoyance to anybody else, we have the power to seize that vehicle."

advertisementPeter Wakeham, of the Noise Abatement Society, said: "They are a thundering nuisance and serve no purpose other than to annoy other road users. I hope more police and local authorities follow suit."

I am sure it will be here in the states soon.

When people no longer own the things they've worked and saved for because governments believe they can sieze them whenever they feel like it, we're heading towards a totalitarian state.

I bet several cities in the US will be watching this in planning their own version of this law.

They just passed a new law for me also and i have heard they can seize cars. I don't think its true but i know for sure the law cracks down on noise violations. But i'm gonna keep bumpin. I just gotta watch where i do it and i'll turn it down in rural areas and at stop lights.

I think you guys are misreading the article:

Besides, they can always simply roll up their windows..

In the city its a $1000 fine or 30 days in jail. My buddy couldnt pay the fine and did 30 days in jail. Such ****. Outside the city it goes to state and county laws that is just a $50 disturbing the peace ticket.

windows dont do crap man, i had my windows up bumping to rubberband banks as i pulled into campus one day, backed into a parking space, went to turn off my car and a campus motor cycle cop pulled right in front of me. Luckily I only got a warning cause while he was talking to me my frined drove in bumping to and started being an ass about it when the cop told him to pull over too. lol
