Enter the "cop chip" rumor. Nobody is sure where it started. I think some fleet manager probably started it, or maybe a few officers who wanted to discourage the public from buying used police cars. Maybe its just something that developed from the fact that the engines in modern police cars, and all vehicles for that matter, are computer controlled. It could also have something to do with the fact that police package cars are traditionally not offered new to the general public because they are special order vehicles with only a limited quantity produced per model year, and availability to the general public would cut down on the manufacturers’ Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) ratings. Since vehicles sold for law enforcement and fire fighting purposes are exempt from CAFE ratings, they are only offered new to these select buyers. Wherever the rumor began, it is outrageous and patently false.
