plywood?

and no. Not if you want a decent box. Plywood is not as dense as MDF and thus it will resonante easier and cancel your bass. You'd better give it SEVERAL layers of that stuff, and then you've spend as much as mdf. Just do it right the first time.
As posted density has nothing to do with it. Good plywood is considerably more rigid and is also lighter weight then MDF, making it the better choise. But it is also more expensive.

What the OP should not use is cheap ply, which will buzz and vibrate due to voids and loose wood fibers within the layers of wood... in his case dollar for dollar the MDF is probably the best choice...

Nothing wrong with plywood at all. It's more rigid than MDF so it'll flex less. Density has nothing to do with flexing. And you actually want a less dense material when dealing with sub boxes in order to keep the resonant frequency further away than what the sub will actually be playing. Doing things like not bracing MDF will be more apt to cause cancellations because of flex and resonant frequency issues. That's one of the main reason for bracing, to keep the resonant frequency higher in frequency than the material the sub will be playing.

Only way I would use plywood is if I doubled up every side and even then MDF would be better...shit just flexes too much. Just stop being a little bitch and buy the MDF already.
Plywood flexes less than MDF in the same situation...maybe you guys are thinking of OSB or something?

Baltic Birch. There is a huge difference in the cheap plywood and Baltic Birch plywood. You already know that though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The cheap 5-layer stuff at Home Depot is still more rigid than MDF. Just lean MDF up against a wall at even a slight angle for a little bit, and it'll be warping. The MDF is certainly easier to work with though.
