I am new to the site and have been searching mant forums and trying to find out all the in's and out's of different HU's. I currently have 2 Memphis Audio 10's in a ProBox (M -class 10's), and 6.5's Memphis Audios for the doors. I am looking for a amp too, but I'll post that in another thread. In a HU I am looking for good SQ, at least 2-3 pre-outs, at least 50W X 4 channels, nice display, a way of adjusting my sub's (turning the bass out of the doors and allowing the subs to carry the base and the doors to carry my highs) (if that sounds stupid, sorry I'm trying to learn as much as I can) Also been told that having an eq in the HU is a def plus. All this is going in a RAM 2500 quad cab. The box is underneath the reat seats. Also, a remote is also a plus if possible. Thanx in advance...Jamie

Welcome to the forum!

What are you going to power with the head unit that the built-in amp's output is critically important? Please bear in mind that regardless of the figures garishly printed on the faceplate or packaging for any head unit you'll never get anywhere near 50 watts of clean, unclipped, undistorted power out of a single channel on ANY head unit.

What you're looking for is a built-in crossover with high-pass settings for the speaker outputs. A "high-pass" filter allows all of the frequencies higher than the cutoff frequency selected by the user. A "low-pass" filter does the opposite...allowing all the tones below the selevted cutoff frequency to pass through while stopping everything above it from being sent to the speakers connected to that particular output. So - you'll want to high-pass filter the 6.5" speakers...the exact setting will depend on the available options and how low those Memphises can play comfortably...and then you'll want to low-pass filter the subs...either at the head unit or at the amplifier.
Is that ProBox a sealed or a ported box? If it is sealed when looking for substage amplifiers you'll also need a subsonic filter to keep the subs from trying to play to far below their tuning frequency which can lead to over-excursion and eventually damage to the subs.

All this is going in a RAM 2500 quad cab.

Okay

So are you looking for suggestions on head units to buy? Well - my first suggestion would be to look into the current Kenwood eXcelon units. Great SQ, feature-packed (moreso the farther up the model list you climb) and can be acquired fairly reasonably.

I continually see people posting about having great luck and liking the sound of various Eclipse HUs, most of the Alpines, and the majority of the Pioneer/Premier units.

Again, welcome to the forum and good luck!

Planning on powering the 6.5 with the HU if possible and the subs with a Mono D class amp possibly a 850W running the subs in a parellel at 2 ohms set-up.

Didn't know that, thanx for the info...like I said...I'm trying to learn as much as I can about car audio.

Its sealed I'm guessing, the cones are inside the ox rather than the standard way of having the magnet and back of the sub in the box. If you go to porboxrocks.com and pull up the 2005 Dodge RAM quad cab, it shows a pic (if interested). I'm guessing with the way the box is made, I will not get any voice sounds outta the subs and only bass. Is this right? Also while asking, what amp would you suggest for the subs, (Memphis Audio M-class 400W peak 200 W RMS 2 ohm speakers.) Thanx for the helpful info, really helps to talk with different people and stock pile the info before making a rash decision. Thanks again for the help, Jamie

The ones that I have seen more positive comments is the Eclipse 8445, the Kenwood 789, and the 889, and the Pioneer 860MP and 770MP
