Please help!! I need a High Output Alternator!!

How much more could a 200A alt be than the 160? Excessive quoted me at $325 shipped for a 220A, so whats he saying for a 160A for you?

he told me 250 shipped for a 160A one, 275 shipped for a 180A.

Do it right. Get the 200a so you wont have to worry about it ever again. I'm sure you can get by with the 180a but why would you want to?

i know big 3 would help, but college is starting soon and im more interest in getting my car running again. Is Big 3 100% necessary to do when you get a high output alternator, or would i be fine just having the garage bolt the new alt on? Would a H.O alt damage anything in my car without me upgrading wires? Also, the reason i want to is its 50 dollars cheaper.

So the amps alone are capable of pulling up to 170 amps. I would get a 220 or so just to be safe...

And tRig, whats your stock alt put out? With an SUV it must be more than his stock 105, correct?
You really cant use fuse ratings to figure current draw. A fuse can handle more then it rating before it blows.

Current draw...

To determine the amperage draw of you amplifier, muiltiply the total output of the amp by two, and divide this number by fourteen(or voltage). For example: (amp is 100 watts by 2 channels) 200 times 2 = 400. 400 divided by 14v is 28.5 amps. The total current draw for this amp would be 28.5 amperes

Also efficency comes into play here.

Where did I say to do the big 3? I have yet to do it because it was not needed. No matter what we say your going to make the same mistakes. It's your character. It's so repetative.

Buy the alt, If you want to save money get the 180. Buy a Stronger starting battery like a red top. Make sure you are using 1/0 guage wire. Listen to us and your "bad news" posts will stop.

so if i don't put in 1/0 gauge wiring for the alternator/battery wire, that will damage things? Even with a 180 amp alternator?

Well, ive read several threads saying that if you go above 160 amps, not upgrading your wiring to 1/0 guage may fry your electrical system. Can someone please elaborate on this then?

sorry if im missing your point guys,im new to electrical stuff. Right now i have ZERO concern on audio performance, i just want minimal dimming (if it still dims a bit, i dont care) and i wanna make sure it won't fry my car, i really don't wanna have to go through buying 0 gauge wire and rewiring the alternator to battery line.

It is a good idea when upgrading the alt to upgrade everything else connected. You are going to have more current running threw the wire, so upgrading it is a good idea. Ask the person you are purchasing it from 4 advice...

And I was originally talking about your power/ground for your amps.

I know it couldn't hurt, but doing a wire upgrade is not an option for me right now. I am 4 hours away from my car now (at school) and i have to come back this week to hope the new alt arrived already and is installed. Would a 160 or 180 amp alt require upgraded wires to not break the car?

No it shouldn't. Here are some sites to check out also:

Edit: my bad, you already got the alt. I'll leave that info for anyone else interested.

a 160 or 180 shouldn't hurt the factory wiring. why? because the car is only going to draw what's needed....but i would definitely upgrade the wire from ur alternator to ur battery. especially with the system...teh battery is going to pulling all the current it can....

and i'm sure u have at least a 4' piece of 4 guage lying around...that' would suffice for now...

and trig is right..upgrading ur battery at the same time will do nothing but help. with a new alt and new batt, ur dimming should be a thing of the past...and i'd get the 180 if ur not going for the 200....
