I put a JL a1400 I had laying around my house into my 300C the other day, i took the signal from my already there factory amp.

well I kow it was gonna be a very high voltage input signal, well I was right my amp with the gain all they way down, is putting out 44 volts (almost 500 watts) it should be doing 30 volts.

i kinda like running this much power out of a small amp, think i can get away with it for a while, or will the amp go soon.

amp does get hot though, LOL

well, it is possible to overdrive an amplifier's input. i've never seen anyone actually do this though.

from the circuit, it becomes clear that for a bjt input stage, bringing the input too high (or low depending on type) will forward bias the base-collector junction, and cause current to flow.

FET input amps can invert phase (clip, but to the wrong polarity) with over driven inputs.

some ICs can enter a latchup condition which will usually result in the rapid destruction of the IC in some entertaining manner.

that said, i've never seen these issues in commercial audio amplifiers. but also i don't use excessive voltage inputs.

--edit -- i've seen the issue with amplifiers used in non-audio applications.
