Pioneer head unit with ipod hook up

I have a Pioneer DEH-5900IB head unit and i was wondering if i have the ipod cable that they make for it and hook up an ipod to it, can i just scroll through the songs on the head unit or can you still scroll through songs and stuff on the actual ipod??

The extra cable allows you to have full control over the iPod by using the deck's scroll knob.
