Pioneer DEH-P6000UB ipod compatibility issue

I recently upgraded to a P6000UB for ipod compatibility and price. I tried running my older, but hardly used, 4g(eneration) 20 gig ipod and it didn't work. It was connected through the USB 2 jack. The ipod turns on and charges, but doesn't register with the HU.

I tested a newer ipod video and it worked just fine. I am assuming that my ipod is too old. I didn't read anything about compatibility issues with older ipods when I ordered the HU, but I can't think of anything else.

Does anyone know if there is a firmware update, etc. for either the ipod or the HU that will fix this? I'd hate to have to buy another ipod...

I don't know if I can update the software without losing all my music. The computer, I originally installed itunes on, fried a while ago. I might be able to access the software and music on the hard drive, but I don't think I can install it on my newer computers. Can I just install itunes and update the software without losing what's on the ipod already?

Try update the ipod to the newest software, i have had this problem before with the very first model ipod released would only work on the decks that ended in "IB" and wouldn't work on the ones that ended in "ub"

does Ipod have a USB setting of MTP or MSC. I know one of the settings wont let my sansa fuze play over my 6000UB but the other one lets it play. I know nothing about Ipod and just using this fix as a general troubleshooting idea.

I had a Pioneer DEH-P5100UB and it did the same with my wife's old iPod. However, it worked fine with my newer one. I would try updating the iPod like mentioned above to see if it works.

The newer Pioneer's are only compatible with certain iPods. I believe the oldest it will work with is the 5th Gen, which is the one with color. You should also try to update your ipod to the newest itunes. Also here's a link to Pioneer's compatibility guide for the F-Series which is their double din navigation. I'm sure it's similar to all of their head units.

Thanks for the help. I got my hopes up when it said compatible with ipod classic and I thought I could update the firmware, but mines is the 4g and it doesn't look like it will work. I guess I'll have buy a new ipod.
