Pioneer AVH 6500 Problem

I just recently bought a Pioneer AVH 6500 deck from a friend. The unit is intalled in my 1999 Silverado. After the unit has been on for several minutes the lights on the face begin to flash. It flashes faster and faster, and ultimately goes out. The controls on the face no longer work once the lights go out, however the disc or radio continue to play. I can get the lights to come back on by removing the face, and replacing it. Does anyone know why this would be, and how I can fix it?
