Piggybacking Tweeters on Mids

I'm new here so a big HELLO to everyone! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I hope y'all doing good today. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have a question about basic speaker wiring.

I have a Sony head unit which takes 4 - 8 ohm speakers.

I have 2 mid range speakers and would like to add 2 tweeters which are all 4 ohm's

The tweeters are old ones taken from a 2001 ford fiesta and they each have what I think is a little transistor or filter for the Hi Frequencies on one of the terminals.

I'd like to know if I can piggyback them off the mid range speakers. They do not have a filter connected to the terminals.

I'm thinking that if I connect 2 speakers making 8 ohm's to one output it should be ok.

I know a crossover's and amplifiers is the correct way to go but I currently cant afford them.

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I'm not so good with car audio.

Many thanks in advance.

Also. There is nowhere to mount the tweeters. I know this is a bit of a botch job but can I just place them on a metal surface and let the magnet stick it there or will that cause problems? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

You can't run the tweeters and mids in series for 8 ohms. If you do, the mids will be affected by the tweeters crossover cap ( the little 'transistor' you saw) and will not play bass.

in the short term, you can just use the tweeters magnet to hold them in place. Over time however, you could end up making the magnet weaker. Which would affect the sound.

Thanks for replying dragon.breath. I'm very grateful. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

So even if the speaker cable from the head unit is connected to the mid range first, then a cable from the mid to the tweeter ( which has the filter), it will still filter the signal for the mid range.

Is that correct?

Thanks again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

you'll just need to wait till you get a proper gear to run things. Anything done now is just wasted effort and can lead to your equipment failing on you aka ghetto rigging.

Thank you both for your help. I will wait until I can buy the gear to do the job properly. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Hi again.

Again I'm sorry if I'm being a bit dim but is it ok if I connect both the mid-range and tweeter to one channel temporarily? For example using the front left channel and connecting both speakers to it but without the filter connected. They are both 4 ohm speakers so that would make 8 ohm's and the head unit supports up to 8 ohm's per channel. Would the tweeter filter some of the mid/low frequency out on its own?

Thanks again. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thanks again for your help guys. I managed to source 2 pairs of component speakers for my car. They are made by a company called 'InPhase' (model number SXT57.1C) and they have a crossover included. They give a very good quality sound.

Have you had any experience of these manufacturers?
inphase is more of a budget UK thing. We have crazy gear over here in the US made to get extremely loud, brazil and russia as have similar stuff as well. European aka france, denmark, germany, italy, make the more refined high end sound quality brands.
