well pretty much all Kicker amps are solid now (I know in the past some models had reliability problems) but Pheonix Gold you have to be weary of some of the newer stuff (specifically the Xexon series). If your going to get phoenix gold go with the titanium, tantrum or some of the discontinued series. I dont think SQ is the issue both are fine in that regards. even the Xexon is fine in that regard. Its design is nearly the same as JL's top line amps except they arent as tightly regulated for more dynamic room (this from a PG tech right off their owns site message board). I guess they should be simular being built by the same chinese company. There are more than a few reports floating around of Xexon amps having reliability problems even on their own site message board. And I'm not a phoenix gold hater as I have a TI500.4 and wouldn't trade it for anything kicker makes. Hell even the octane series doesn't seem to have any issues just the xexon. Of any current models I'd go with Kicker. Fact is phoenix gold is going the way of rockford and a bunch of other once great american car audio companies. Kicker and MTX seem to be the only ones not folding to cheap production and cheaper internal parts to save a buck.
which phoenix gold line are you looking at?
