Perhaps an unusual question...

Hello, I must say this is my first time posting in this forum, however, not my first time posting in forums. I've been a member of multiple forums for nearly a decade now...

Anyways, I digress.

My question is, back in 2005, I bought a JL 13w7 from a local company that was going out of business, for $500. The sub was brand new, in box, never used before, etc.

Anways, I have never used the sub, as I was in the process of buying a truck at the time, and it took me over a year to design a box for the sub, and it took me two years to build the box (fairly limited spare time outside of work).

My question is, is there anything I have to worry about with the sub not being used for that long of a time? It's properly been stored and never moved from where I originally put it.

Anything I need to check, etc?

Thanks!

Joe

i say check the glue joints - but other than that it should be good to go - like others said start off slow giving it a week or 2 to monitor performence as it breaks in and loosens up a little.

i have a pair of nos 8" jbl subs that were made waay back and just found that the glue from the spider to the basket landing has let go :/ sub has never been hooked up to an amp

I have the sub all mounted in a JL spec'd ported box. I have the amps mounted on top of the box, and I've got the sub wired.

Just need to get this thing into my truck, hook up my distribution blocks and run the wires cleanly to the amps, and then it's off to see exactly what I've been missing for over 8 years......

Sometimes you will get spiders sag when woofers sit for long periods of time. Generally if I have a sub I know I wont' use for a while with a softer suspension, I'll flip it over every few months so the suspension isn't being held one way or another for super long periods. Once you break it in, it will still probably be fine, very few speakers can be damaged from vertical storage, but it does happen from time to time. Just something to remember for next time, and for anyone else who has a softer suspension speaker sitting in a closet.

^^yep my Catchfire XT15 is starting to sag.... have never reconed it from new (and was one of the first models) bet i'll have no chance of getting the same type of dustcap too

My god.

I got everything wired in, ran it for a couple hours at about 25% volume with the gain at 10 o'clock.

Then I slowly started increasing the gain until I hit about 2 o'clock...

This sub can get loud!

I am running an Orion 1200D, wired to 0.75ohm.

My buddy gave me some tunes to put on my iPod and it will absolutely rattle my brain at half volume...

I'm honestly scared to turn it up any louder.

I bet your clipping the hell out of it.

He said that because you said you're just turning the gain up with no reasoning whatsoever going into it. Check out the thread for setting your gains with a DMM. It'll save your equipment.

I'm not as dumb as you think.

I turned my radio to my max volume preferred level (about 60% of full volume), and had the gain down because the ******* sub hasn't been used for eight years.

I know what clipping is, I'm trying to fix that issue right now on my srt4 with my Type R 8s.

i adjusted the gain so that I could get max output at that volume without distortion or clipping.

but what do I know. these are internet forums after all. everyone online is a professional in some way or another.
