why not primer it? I wont hurt to primer and a can or primer doesnt cost too much. I think one or two coats of primer, your airbrushing, and a clear coat or two would look good. Only time paint looks bad on mdf is on the edges where its rough. You could prolly sand it down pretty good before you paint it and have it look decent. Paint before you put it together so you get all the crick and cranny's .

 
x3 .... build then paint but yes use lots of primer... as much as it needs to stop soaking it up... I built and painted my giant fish tank hood out of mostly mdf not only does it weigh a ton but it took a ton of primer and paint... seal off the edges and sand them down well to prevent diff shades... and use extra layers of primer on them to have them come out right...

 
You can also rub glue into the end "grain" of the MDF to keep it from soaking up too much primer. Fiberglass resin works also. Soak it in glue or resin, let it cure, sand smooth, prime and paint. If done right you won't even be able to tell which way the end grain is because it will all look like one uniform piece.
