Primer and sand first, then any type of decent spray paint. I liked Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy black paint...went on thick, very smooth and hard.

 
depends on what your trying to do.if you just want to hide the wood color flat black works best with a coat of primer.If you want glossy finish it requires alot more work.If going that route I suggest using automotive quality paint not regular rusto.
