Paint Job??

not to mention body work if it needs it.
from the sounds of it, you might as well just go to maaco. as a painter myself, i generally don't send anyone to maaco, but it sounds like you just want something cheap that's going to look decent from a ways away, and that would be your best bet.

but if you want something that actually looks good, and lasts a long time, you're in for a G minimum.
i dont even think maaco does decals either,,,,,,,,,,,

but keep in mind OP that a good paint job is like 90% prep, so if you fuck the prep up, there isn't a painter in the world that can make a bad prep job turn into a good paint job
and i definetly wouldnt wanna do that, man if i spend that much on a paint jb, im not gonna be able to get my rims by time the summer hits..............

depends on the brand of paint, and the quality of work done....
for example,

take it to maaco, and you wont be spending a whole lot. but you will probably get a pretty bad paint job. (from what i have heard, they dont do much prep work at all)
Funny I should see this today because I had a friend go by maaco yesterday to get a price on painting his car. They quoted him $550 for single stage. He said they took him to the back to show him how they prepped it and they had a car completely stripped down to the metal. They told him that is how they do their paintjobs. I just don't believe it for that price.

or you could take it to an actual body shop where they will properly prep it and paint it proffesionally. this of course is far more expensive but you will get the best results. a normal body shop rate starts around 80 or so per hour. so labour would probably be 1000+
Wow, body shop labor rates around here are $40/hr.

and quality paint is a whole different factor. you could buy shit paint, or get good stuff. im buying house of kolor kandy base for my 180sx and it is around 90/quart. so im going to be spending around 900-1200 just on paint.

thats my limited knowledge for ya hah
There is a HUGE difference in paint prices. Some are way overpriced and some you get what you pay for. Any reputable name such as DUPONT, SPIES HECKLER, PPG, SHERWIN WILLIAMS, etc will be fine. As for the house of kolor, i used it on my other truck but bought it from http://www.hokpaint.com and it was about half price of what a store would charge you. If you are going a single color Nason makes a very inexpensive black, white, and red.

If I were you I would go to some shops and ask to see their work and go from there.

then try to find someone you know that will do the prep for you cheap. a friend of a friend that will just do it for a couple beers or something. then all you have to do is pay for the paint and the paintjob itself. but even then, you still get what you pay for.

people don't realize that a decent paint job isn't exactly cheap. maaco and their ridiculously priced hackjobs brainwashed everyone into thinking painting a car is cheap and easy.

If you put racing stripe and number decals on an 01 Malibu, I will personally start a petition to permaban you from CA.com //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

spend the grand on a decent paint job and call it a day

true....I would say that as well....prep is 90% and if that is F'ed up then your SOL....Maybe stripping it and sanding

x1000000000, And If you go to maaco you need to take pics fast, as the paint will fly off as you are going down the road!

The worst idea you can do is have your "friend" help you sand the car down. If not done properly you will create waves and then the whole car will have to be block sanded to straighten everything out. Not to mention scuffing plastic moulding and things like that. You really get into some $$ when you have to do that. Just save up the money and get it done right. I mean, anybody can paint, but not everyone can do it right. I know the paint gun I use for bc/cc was $800 and my ss/primer gun was around $300. There is a major difference in tools that really make a paintjob. For my truck, I wouldn't have charged a penny less than $3500 to do it
