If installed right the JL will outperform most. However, the OP need to clarify which direction he's going. SQ or SPL? Or a good mix of both, which a lot of subs can deliver. Though some maybe more SPL than SQ and vice versa.

Okay lets deal with a sub and powering it for now. I do like a healthy mix of SPL and SQ...but SQ is definitely paramount. I need a reference for a good deep and punchy sub and something good to drive it.

JL amps sucks, JL subs are good, but pricey

Sundown, Kicker, Atomic, RD Audio. It all depends on what you're looking to spend and what kind of power you're looking for.

I understand that the amount of power a sub needs goes hand in had with the power you choose for it. If someone could give me a good combo of either 2 x 12" and an amp or 1 x 12" and an amp that really kicks ***...that would be a good start. I'd probably stay in the 500-700 dollars in just that area.

good subs, not worth the price at all, you can find subs that will out perform them if installed right for cheaper.

What do you think about the Brahmas. I heard those were pretty in demand last time I was setting up a system.
